Plus One : Louisiana

What would $15 million buy today? A mansion in Beverly Hills? Stud Rights to a few Champion Thoroughbred horses? In 1803, $15 million bought almost 900,000 square miles of land that was known as something called the Louisiana Purchase. Put in perspective, 900,000 square miles is approximately three and 1/4 Texases. Pretty big stuff. With a rich and varied history, Louisiana is a gem to behold. What's not to like about a state that boasts New Orleans as one of its own? NOLA has world -renowned food (and chefs, see Paul Prudhomme), Mardi Gras, voodoo, above-ground cemeteries and The World Champion (who dat!) New Orleans Saints.
Louisiana is blessed with some of the best fishin" and hunting anywhere, freshwater or saltwater fishin', deer hunting and, of course, alligators, hence the nickname, The Sportsman's Paradise. I love the warm, friendly people, great food (mudbugs!!) and outdoors opportunities of  this magical place called Louisiana. C'est bon !

  1. That sure looks like our beloved Caddo lake in that pic.
Were you aware that paddle boats used to cruise up the Red River from NOLA and take the backwaters through there all the way to Jefferson, Tx.?
The Red River is no longer navigable, as its name implies, it is red from the clay silt washing down and blocking passage. Along with the damn on the Big Cyprus, Jefferson missed out on becoming a railroad town in the 1800's, as they thought the paddle boat trade was the way to go, so nearby Marshall became the railroad center of East Texas.

  4. Good!
    Don't forget my beloved Marshall.
    Lots of history there.
From being the temporary capitol of Missouri during the war of northern aggression, to the expansion of the RR during the 1800's. Not to mention the launching of the Barrymore acting families prominence.
Also, this coming football season, Marshall and Longview will play their official one hundredth game. A storied rivalry that actually goes back to the 1880's.

  6. Tell you what, if I can this weekend I will try and crank one out.
There is also Uncertain, Tx to write about.
Don Henley of the Eagles is from East Texas, a little too liberal for my taste, but he adores Caddo Lake too. This video was filmed in Marshall and the Uncertain area.
